Making conservation incentives work for Indigenous Peoples and local communities, Insights and recommendations from Peru

This brief analyzes Peru’s Conditional Direct Transfers (TDCs), a conservation incentive program offering payments to Indigenous communities with formal land rights for forest protection. Communities receive ~USD 2.82 per hectare annually for up to five years and allocate funds toward forest management, sustainable business, and community activities. While effective for deforestation prevention, the program excludes communities lacking formal land titles. The study highlights 10 strategies for fostering equitable partnerships between Indigenous communities and program implementers, emphasizing best practices for nature-based conservation efforts.
